Measuring beauty with
scientific precision: the BrillianceScope™ Analyzer
|
The
BrillianceScope™ Analyzer is an imaging spectrophotometer
that measures the ability of a diamond to refract and focus light.
The diamond is measured in a controlled lighting environment consisting
of multiple lighting angles. The instrument offers a scientific,
objective means of evaluating how well a diamond has been faceted
by measuring the light that is returned through its crown. The
BrillianceScope™ studies the angle that light is reflected
from a diamond by illuminating it with a precise light source
from six different angles.
 Thousands
of diamonds were evaluated to determine the range of light performance™
achievable, which became the basis for GemEx’s Comparative Light
Performance Evaluation Scales. These scales are simple linear
graphs which show how a particular diamond performs in relation
the entire performance range.
BRILLIANCESCOPE™ DEFINITION OF TERMS
A diamonds beauty comes from its ability to manipulate and return
light. It is essentially a collection of prisms and mirrors.
The alignment of these prisms and mirrors is what make one diamond
beautiful, and another dull. This beauty can be measured using
the standards of Light Performance™.
WHITE LIGHT: (Sometimes referred to as brilliance.)
The BrillianceScope™ looks at the overall stone area in
each of 5 reflectance lighting angles and determines what portion
of the stone is returning bright white light from the crown.
The resulting measure answers the question: How does this diamond
compare to others of the same shape?
COLOR LIGHT: (Sometimes referred to as fire.)
The BrillianceScope™ looks at each lighting angle and determines
where bright color light is returning from the crown. How does
it compare to other diamonds of the same shape?
SCINTILLATION:
Scintillation is the term used for the changing colors, radiance
and sparkle of light rays emitted from the stone when it moves
or a light source is changed.
WHY should consumers look at Light Performance™?
- Gain a clear understanding how cutting affects the beauty
of a diamond.
- See the difference between high-end stones and others.
- Be able to make a value/price decision.
- To understand why price and certificates are not the only
consideration.
